Immigration & Refugee Legal Services
CWS provides legal services at local offices throughout the United States. In New York alone, the legal services team has impacted over 600 individuals in FY 2014, helping file immigration applications and providing the necessary guidance to keep families together. The program is staffed by 18 accredited representatives and seven attorneys spread throughout almost a dozen different sites in the U.S. Those attorneys and representatives are continually on staff to ensure that humanitarian-based immigration petitions are filed, keeping families together.
From the CWS Corporate Center in New York, the Associate Director for Immigration Services provides support for regional offices with complicated legal casework and immigration procedures. The Associate Director also conducts training and support for regional legal staff. New York is also home to the CWS annual John Backer Award event, which honors service to the refugee community.
As a city built by immigrants through the years, New York is an ideal base for the CWS legal services program. Within the local community, the legal services team provides immigration clinics at local churches and group processing events in partnership with other community-based organizations. Recently, CWS partnered with the Brooklyn Public Library to provide a naturalization group workshop which saw large numbers of lawful permanent residents applying for citizenship.
